Just as custom homes and their designs have evolved over the years, so have custom home plans; they must to fit the designs people want, which is also evolving. For the most part, home plans are usually of the standard variety and include split-level homes, ranchers, and normal subdivision styles and they are found in abundance.
The problem is that many times more custom home plans designers and firms exist now than ever before because of the Internet and its vast audience reach. As America’s online experience grew from entertainment to e-commerce and sophisticated information delivery systems, custom home designers began to display their work and portfolios on Internet websites as a way of impressing potential clients. Soon, they found that people would be willing to buy the plans right from that site they were using to highlight their work and the race was on for all existing custom home design firms to flock to the Internet and keep up.
Then independent designers started to get in on the fun and sites offering custom home plans multiplied. The need to differentiate your designs from an increasing number of competitors led to a greater variety of plans and services. Design firms that specialize in exotic or highly specialized custom home designs moved to the Internet, as it offered the chance to generate business in other areas of the country that they would not have had access to before the Internet.
A World of Choices
While not everyone is interested in a dome home, one can find many websites that offer complete plans and even construction kits for them and these plans are there for a reason; the number of sales made of those plans. Solar homes, greenhouses, and other exotic custom home plans are easy to find, and design firms are willing to customize the stock plans to meet the customers’ needs, for a flat hourly fee, of course.
It has even gotten to the point that some sites offer free, online software allowing anyone to design their dream home, whatever it may be. While these designs will still need to be turned into working blueprints, if it is to be built, any design firm will be willing to tackle the task. The cost is also something that has evolved and with competition comes bargains. In the past, custom home plans could cost thousands of dollars and take weeks or months to complete. Now it is possible to find plans that are ready to build and code compliant for hundreds, even thousands less than before. Even the cost of custom homes themselves have begun to come down as custom home builders work to expand their markets, creating even more competition.
